New York Rising

by Tom
(Long Island, NY)

When you think about Triathlon, you generally think of warmer climes...Hawaii..San Diego...Texas...Florida..Australia...New Zealand. However, very interesting findings in an article on Slowtwitch today; findings which clearly illustrate the growing popularity of Triathlon here in NY.

Hard to pinpoint the trend, but growing demand for races such as the local sprints (Montauk, Tobay, North Fork, Gold Coast), oly's (olympic distances such as the NYC Triathlon, Mighty Hamptons and Westchester) and Ironman (half/full) races (Mighty Montauk, Lake Placid IM) are indicative of this trend. In fact, many of these races sell out very quickly.

Counterintuitive, given the harsh weather (i.e. today's snowstorm), but we do live in a competitive culture in NYC and the Greater Metro area. Hardcore athletes, that have to withstand and battle the elements and who very highly motivated and seek out white knuckle competitions, such as Triathlon are scattered throughout this dense region.

I hope it's not a trend, but more of indicative of an overall shift towards a healthy lifestyle. Good news for NY - Hope it continues..
