Having a good plan starts this time of the year. You should first be figuring out your race schedule now. You training will differ if your first race is either in May or August.. Yes there is a thing called over training and it can hamper your performance. Sort out your first race and focused training on that event should start around 3 months before the event.

Training plans differ for each individual, really because it's a function of where you are starting from that determines the details.
Having said that, I would refer you to series of posts on Slowtwitch aimed at beginners.
